Bucha Brew Kombucha

A brief history of Kombucha:

Kombucha it is a fermented tea drink that has been around for hundreds of years.  Made using a SCOBY (which is a bacteria and yeast culture in a biofilm.)

Together these elements create a fizzy, slightly sour tea beverage full of probiotics and live bacteria.  So basically, its a cross between Beer and Kefir but with nominal alcohol content.

Kombucha has been touted in the media for a variety of medicinal claims although the agreement among doctors seems to be that a bottle a day won’t do any harm while providing much-needed probiotics to the digestive system.

My Experience:

I have tried a lot of Kombucha products.  They look trendy, cost an arm and a leg and generally taste like an experiment gone wrong. I even tried one from Brew Dr. with Cayenne pepper in it, that tasted like spicy vinegar both on the way down and all the burps back up.  So, when a friend handed me a bottle of Bucha Brew in Blueberry, I was less than enthusiastic.

Retailing for $4.70 at the local Save-On Foods this drink is one of a kind.  Made in British Columbia, it is actually available on tap across much of Vancouver. It is low caffeine and low sugar. Boasting a minuscule 60 calories per bottle with 30% of the daily requirement of Vitamin C, this drink claims to be

..a refreshing, well balanced alternative delivered to enlighten your taste buds.

bucha2I was not convinced.  While making the classic ‘icky medicine’ face and popped the top and was pleasantly surprised to find out I was..WRONG.  I was so wrong.  This actually tasted great.  There was no harsh vinegar taste or smell.  In fact, I couldn’t put the bottle down.    When it was done, I wanted another.   I am happy to say that I am a Bucha Brew convert.

They offer a variety of different flavors and even seasonal offerings.  When I go to the grocery store, I am going to invest in more of these drinks.  I will, of course, say it is for the health benefits but, really its benefitting my taste buds.
